Pre-Operation Check:

• Inspect clamps, tool holders, and connections for wear/looseness.

• Ensure power/pneumatic/hydraulic systems are secure.

• Wear safety glasses, gloves, and anti-slip footwear.

Operation:

• Avoid exceeding rated speed/load limits.

• Monitor for unusual noises/vibrations; halt immediately if detected.

• Never perform maintenance while the machine is running.

Post-Operation:

• Power down correctly and secure components.

 

 

Common Problems and Solutions in Flange Face Machining

 

1. Machine Vibration

Significant vibration during machining not only affects machining accuracy but also accelerates tool wear and damages the drive system.

Solutions:

Recheck and reinforce the fastening of the flange

Before starting the feed, ensure the tool is securely locked in the tool holder

Reduce cutting depth

Reduce feed rate

2. Rough Surface Finish / Chatter Marks

Chatter marks, scratches or uneven rough surfaces on the flange sealing face reduce sealing performance.

Solutions:

Promptly rotate or replace worn blades; most carbide blades are designed with four usable cutting edges.

Choose cutting tool material suitable for the workpiece material (carbon steel/stainless steel, etc.).

Use a two-step cutting method: first perform heavier rough cutting, then lighter finishing cutting.

Recalibrate the machine's balance.

Adjust the feed speed to an appropriate range.

3. Excessive Tool Wear

Tool life is significantly shortened, and insert edge wear rate far exceeds normal levels.

Solutions:

 Properly reduce cutting speed
Replace with carbide material with higher wear resistance- Use PVD-coated inserts, which can extend tool life by 3-4 times
Use cutting fluid during machining to reduce tool temperature
Regularly check the wear condition of the inserts

4. Substandard Sealing Surface Finish

The finished flange surface is too smooth or too rough, causing leakage after installation. A common problem in flange face machining is a mismatch between sealing surface roughness and gasket type.

Solutions:

Refer to ASME/ANSI standards to select the correct surface roughness range (usually controlled between 125–500 AARH).

Use the correct tools to repair damaged sealing surfaces.

Ensure the flange surface is flat and not warped.

When removing old gaskets, do not use chisels, screwdrivers, or grinders to remove residues to avoid scratching the flange surface.

5. Flange Misalignment

Bolt holes of mating flanges cannot align, or there are irregular gaps between flange faces.

Solutions:

Perform on-site alignment and calibration of the flange

Use standards such as ASME B16.5 as a basis for alignment calibration

If necessary, re-machine the flange face to restore flatness

Conduct a comprehensive dimensional check before installation
